Senior Accountant

Location: New Haven, CT

Job Summary

Responsible for Statutory accounting for worldwide insurance operations, IFRS accounting for Canadian insurance operations, or US GAAP accounting for charitable 501(c)(3) and investment management companies, or a combination thereof. Controls daily input of general ledger (G/L) activity and monthly closing of G/Ls. Monitors clearing account reconciliations. Prepares or oversees preparation of various monthly and quarterly management accounts and supporting schedules, including budget vs actual financial statements. Assists Director of Financial Reporting and Manager-of Statutory Reporting with preparation of Quarterly and Annual statements. Prepares or oversees preparation of audited financial statements and accompanying footnotes. Assists with preparation of year-end schedules for external audit and appropriate year end surveys as required by rating agencies and associations. Supervises accounting tasks performed of the Accountant and Associate Accountant. Demonstrates an advanced knowledge of accounting in working with Statutory, GAAP and IFRS accounting standards.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Controls daily input of general ledger activity and closing of general ledger each month. Works on daily basis with general ledgers for insurance operations, investment management entities, and related Charitable entities (U.S. 501(c)(3) and Canadian Not-for-Profit entities).
  2. Prepares quarterly and annual statements using Workpaper Manager (WPM) and/or monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements using QuickBooks.
  3. Prepares annual audited financial statements and accompanying footnotes.
  4. Supervises work of Accountant(s) and Associate Accountant(s) and provides training and education on job responsibilities and business operations.
  5. Oversees monitoring of monthly clearing account reconciliations prepared by business areas.
  6. Prepares or oversees preparation of depreciation, expense account analysis and allocation schedules.
  7. Prepares monthly, quarterly, or year-end schedules, as requested by management, external auditor, and various year-end surveys.

Systems and Technical Knowledge:

  1. QuickBooks.
  2. Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Education: BS in Accounting.

Experience: 4-6 years insurance industry experience.
