Senior Project Manager

Our valued client in New Haven, CT is seeking an experienced Project Manager.

This position is responsible for leading, planning, managing and directing multiple complex projects consisting of one or more project teams.  Coordinates scheduling and team building; maintains working relationships with functional areas outside of IT.  Required to achieve the objectives of concurrent projects, with enterprise-wide impact.  Allocates staff and budget resources as needed to achieve the objectives of one or more projects, any of which could span multiple areas and business functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine business needs for projects with enterprise-wide impact. Identify constraints, risks and assumptions. Access resource (technical and non-technical) and time requirements for projects. Perform cost-benefits analysis as needed. Work closely with and manage expectations of the business customers. Help drive business decisions required for project success. Ensure that the proper business area resources are engaged in support of the agreed upon delivery.
  • Identify scope changes. Assessment with business of project (time, resource & cost) impact. Provide management with information about the requested scope change. Manage scope change requests.
  • Drive and monitor project progress, expenses and quality results of projects to identify potential problem areas. Resolve issues and build consensus and commitment to delivery of the agreed upon solution. Correct problems and/or escalate as needed.
  • Build cohesive project teams. Conduct and/or participate in reviews for project team members.
  • Build communication plans as needed. Ensure business partners are aware of project progress. Communicate with other IT management about their teams’ potential involvement and about progress if appropriate. Keep team informed. Drive key stakeholder meetings. Provide communication to senior management. Participate in and/or drive steering committee meetings.
  • Engage project team to take action on issue resolution and risk mitigation planning. Recommend course of action to management for significant issues and risks. Manage issues, drive resolutions, identification of risks and risk mitigation plans.
  • Identify potential vendors for inclusion in selection process. Work with business partners to identify selection criteria. Drive vendor selection process. Engage business partners in analysis where appropriate. Perform vendor comparisons and lead recommendations for selection. Manage vendor relationship and delivery to ensure project schedule and costs are within identified parameters.
  • Keep informed of advances in Project Management techniques and methodologies. Seek and obtain Project Management Professional (PMP) certification through Project Management Institute (PMI) organization. Understands and utilizes Software Development Life Cycle methodologies (SDLCs) based on project need.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • 7 to 10 years of IT and business work experience, including 4 or more years managing projects. Experience with projects in multiple technologies and functions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Project Management, Computer Science or other business related discipline and 8-10 years of diverse experience in IT, 5 of which must have been in project management leading technical and / or business projects teams, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience in the Life Insurance Industry a Plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, business judgment, proven expertise in directing the efforts of a technical staff. Excellent facilitation skills.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and team building skills are required
  • Ability to manage projects from conception to successful implementation possessing solid management skills. Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects in a cross-functional environment.
  • PMP certification recommended.

This position works under limited supervision,  must be able to perform analysis of major issues which have company-wide scope.  Also develops recommendations which influence long-term policies.
